Filmmaker-anthropologists Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor began documenting sheep drives across Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth mountains in 2001, just as the generations-old grazing practice was coming to an end. Eight years later, the pair released SWEETGRASS, a poetic but unsentimental contemplation of the passing of the American West. Drawing from hundreds of hours of digital video footage, SWEETGRASS brings us closer to both the shepherds, the sheep, and the land itself, emphasizing the textures of the environment and the physical toll of the journey. Recently restored in 4k, SWEETGRASS remains a triumph of observation, and one of the 21st century’s essential films.

Following the screening, filmmaker Lucien Castaing-Taylor will appear to discuss the film with J.P. Sniadecki, Associate Professor and Director of the MFA in Documentary Media at Northwestern.

This screening is supported by the Hoffman Visiting Artist Series and the MFA in Documentary Media at Northwestern.
