Acclaimed filmmaker Lisandro Alonso’s first feature is a key film of the New Argentine Cinema, a loose movement of filmmakers that directly and obliquely deal with Argentina’s troubled history and its place in the modern world. Los Muertos is a haunting, quiet film about the physical and psychic journey of a man recently released from prison. Already on the fringes of society, Vargas moves further into the untamed jungle and waterways as he travels to find his adult daughter. Very little happens; Vargas becomes only a conduit through which Alonso explores the increasingly alien landscape. It’s a film of rhythms and textures of a world where the laws that Vargas violated no longer apply.
