Work Study & Internship Opportunities


Summer term 2018

The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art is offering Undergraduate Curatorial Internships for Northwestern University undergraduates with Art History experience during summer term 2018. Interns will gain exposure to museum practice through work with curators and other museum staff. They will undertake directed research on works of art in the permanent collection. For students interested in pursuing a museum career, or in gaining a behind-the-scenes look at how museums work, this is an opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience.


Applicants must be undergraduate students with Art History coursework or related experience. The position calls for strong research, writing, and editorial skills. Computer competency, organizational abilities, and attention to detail are also required. 


The two-month Internship takes place during summer term June 25 through August 18, 2018. Undergraduate Curatorial Interns are expected to work 30 hours per week except during holidays. Interns will be paid $15.00 per hour.

Please describe how your coursework and/or prior experience qualify you for the position and why the Internship is important to your education and career goals.

2) Resume

Please include your major, if declared, and anticipated graduation date, your employment history, and a list of art history, studio, or other relevant courses taken.

3) Writing Sample

Select a representative writing sample of max. five (5) pages and submit with your application. It can be a portion of a paper written for one of the courses listed on your resume.

4) Reference

The following positions are currently open to Northwestern Students with Federal Work-Study allotments:


Manage classroom AV set-up, configuration and take down of equipment. Troubleshoot and resolve all classroom technical AV set-up issues. Ensure PA systems, microphones and digital audio recording devices are functioning properly. Prepare technical materials for classroom use. Provide necessary computer support for faculty member for both PCs and Macs. 


Must be an NU undergraduate student with a Federal Work-Study allotment for the 2016-17 academic year.

Visitors Services Assistant

Available Fall 2016

To assist with all aspects of visitor services at the Museum: reception desk, admission, registration for public programs, visitor statistics, patrolling galleries, and assisting with shop sales and inventory.

  • Assists with general museum reception and visitor services, meets and greets the general public at the main entrance reception desk
  • Provides general information about the museum, exhibits and the community
  • Takes admission and public program fees using a Point of Sale system
  • Answers the telephone and fields calls to appropriate staff members
  • Handles and balances cash and related paper entries
  • Assists with sales and inventory in the Museum Shop
  • Assists with the promotion, registration and implementation of public programs
  • Relays accurate information about planned programs/events
  • May assist with informal tours of the galleries to individuals and groups


Must be an NU undergraduate student with a Federal Work-Study allotment for the 2016-17 academic year.

Must enjoy working with the public, meeting new people, partnering with volunteers
Must possess good communication skills
Broad general knowledge and interest in the community, particularly visitor services and attractions would be an asset
Applicant must have been a full time student in the spring and returning to school full time in the fall
