Bill Viola, The Greeting

Bill Viola, The Greeting, 1995, video/sound installation.

Artists and writers have long been preoccupied with the challenge of depicting emotions and capturing the essence of social interactions. Bill Viola, one of the world’s leading video artists, explores these forces in his work. The Greeting (1995), inspired by the painting The Visitation (1528–29) by the sixteenth-century Italian artist Pontormo, protracts a brief social exchange to reveal the complexity of emotions in human encounters.
