Educating the Eye: The Year of the Fine Print

Join Block Museum members for Educating the Eye, a year-long series of programs about fine prints and the art of printmaking. Over the course of the year you’ll develop a keen sense for examining, understanding, and collecting prints. The series covers different printing techniques and their histories, their special aesthetic characteristics, and what makes particular examples special.

  • The Art of Etching and Lithography at Anchor Graphics
    Monday, October 19, 9 AM–2:30 PM
Take a trip to Anchor Graphics, a fine-art print shop at Columbia College in Chicago, for a demonstration of how etchings and lithographs are made, followed by lunch at the historic Chicago Firehouse Restaurant. Understanding the complexity of these printmaking processes will lead to your greater appreciation of their unique differences. You’ll also have an opportunity to view several works printed at Anchor Graphics by Chicago artists that are now part of the Block Museum collection. The cost is $50 for Block Museum members; $70 for nonmembers. Price includes transportation and lunch. Space is limited, and reservations are required.

  • Printing in History
    Wednesday, February 10, 9:30–11:00 AM
Join David Alan Robertson, the Block’s Ellen Philips Katz Director, for a historical perspective on prints. Learn about the key figures and important innovators in printmaking and how their work relates to the broader history of art. After a background presentation in our auditorium, we’ll view prints from the Block Museum collection in our Print, Drawing, and Photography Study Center. Light morning fare will be served at 9 a.m. Free for Block Museum members; $10 for nonmembers. Reservations are recommended but not required.

Call 847.491.7540 to register for these programs.

Upcoming events in the Educating the Eye series include a look at the special characteristics of the engraving in May and a viewing of recent additions to the Block Museum collection with senior curator Debora Wood in June. Look for more information in the future.

Block Circle Committee

The Block Circle Committee is part of a larger group of donors—The Block Circle—who support the Museum at the $1,000 level and above. The Block Circle Committee plans special events for Block Museum members and Block Circle donors, such as the Educating the Eye series, and raises funds to expand the Museum’s permanent collection and support its programming.

If you would like to learn more about joining the Block Circle Committee, please contact Helen Hilken at h-hilken@northwestern.edu or 847.491.4178.
