The Artist at War: John Swope and the History of
War Photography
On September 26, Carolyn Peter, director of the Laband Art Gallery, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, spoke about photographer John Swope's images of Japan at the end of World War II and their relationship to war documentation. Peter is the curator of the exhibition A Letter from Japan: The Photographs of John Swope, on display at the Block September 19 to November 30, 2008.

"The Artist at War" is part of Three American Photographers: In-Depth, a year-long series of educational programs exploring the work of John Swope, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Gordon Parks. The program is also held in conjunction with American Art American City, a citywide initiative celebrating the history of American art, sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
