Work-Study and Student Positions

A diversity of work-study and student jobs are available at the Museum. All of these opportunities provide important professional experience not only in gallery and museum work, but also in the fields of business, education, administration, and public relations. The Museum provides a friendly, energetic work environment and the opportunity for a great deal of responsibility. Click on the job titles below for full descriptions. Bookstore Assistant

Responsibilities:
Cashier for museum bookstore. Sell books and other items. Answer phones and visitor questions. Provide basic visitor information regarding exhibitions and programs. Interact with security staff to make the museum a safe environment. Some administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications:
Previous cash handling experience preferred. Strong customer service skills. Major in art history NOT required.

$8.00/hr

Curatorial Aide: Work-Study Only

Responsibilities:
Provide administrative and research support, as needed, in the curatorial offices. Primary responsibilities include assisting curator in exhibition research, development, and preparation, as well as various administrative tasks, creating exhibition files and reports, and working on collection records.

Qualifications:
Must have strong research and writing skills, good organization, ability to work with various computer programs, such as Excel, Powerpoint, and Photoshop. Ability to scan and edit digital photos, compile reports, proofread, and fact-check would be useful, as well. Must be able to work on a variety of tasks and projects.

Pay rate:
$8.00/hr

Preparatory Aide: Work-Study Only

Responsibilities:
Assist with the maintenance of the art museum. Occasional aid in the packing and unpacking of traveling art exhibitions, helping to handle works of art in a professional museum setting. Assist in lighting exhibits. Assist in all other aspects of exhibit preparation, including hanging labels, hanging wall text, and framing art. May assist in some construction.

Qualifications:
Must have work-study. Ideal candidate has experience with shop tools, is able to lift 40-50 lbs., and enjoys a variety of tasks.

$8.00/hr

Print Room Assistant

Responsibilites:
Participates in the general operations of the print room and in documenting and researching the collection. Regularly transports work to and from the conservation lab, pulls works for visitors, and properly cares for and stores collection works. Maintains necessary records on the movement, location, and project status of works of art in the Museum’s collection files and database. Additional responsibilities may also include library research, preparing acquisition-related documents, assisting Museum visitors, and aiding in exhibition installations.

Qualifications:
Background in Art or Art History is helpful, but not required. Ability to identify print, drawings, and photographic media a plus. Demonstrates a high regard for the care and handling of works of art and exercises conscientious use of time with careful attention to detail. Must be capable of some heavy lifting and effectively communicating with the public. Freshman and sophomores are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those who can make at least a two year commitment. Position reports to the senior curator.

Print Room Conservation

Responsibilities:
Archive the collection by matting works on paper, framing works for exhibition and assisting the Museum's collections and exhibitions assistant as needed. Additional duties include aiding in exhibition installations, making and installing exhibition labels, and assisting in various manual tasks as needed.

Qualifications:
Previous matting and framing experience or portfolio and bookmaking experience is desirable. Knowledge of printmaking and photographic processes, drawing materials, and papermaking techniques is helpful. Must be capable of handling artworks (some heavy) safely. Close attention to detail, excellent manual skills, and a professional approach to work environment are required. Freshman and sophomores are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those who can make at least a two year commitment. Position reports to the senior curator.

Public Service Officer

Responsibilities:
Provide security support during public hours. Responsible for greeting the public, fielding questions in the lobby, keeping attendance records, bookstore security, and working exhibition openings. Flexible schedule, 10–15 hours per week expected as well as attendance at security service meetings.

Qualifications:
Ability to work well with the public. Reliable, flexible, and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must have neat and clean appearance.

$8.00/hr

Summer Internships

Individual internship opportunities can be created based on student interests and the needs of the Museum. Such internships may focus on a single project or be department-based. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. These unpaid internships take place during the summer.
