Work-Study and Student Positions

A diversity of work-study and student jobs are available at the Museum. All of these opportunities provide important professional experience not only in gallery and museum work, but also in the fields of business, education, administration, and public relations. The Museum provides a friendly, energetic work environment and the opportunity for a great deal of responsibility. Click on the job titles below for full descriptions. Block Cinema Audio/Visual Aide

Responsibilities:
Participate in the weekly running of Block Cinema including shipping, projecting, researching, copy editing, graphic design, and regular office work.

Qualifications:
Projection, graphic design, and/or copy editing experience a plus. Knowledge of movies is NOT necessary.

$7.50/hr

Block Cinema Composition Aide

Responsibilities:
The editing and proofreading aide works with the Museum’s Motion Picture Curator/Programmer. Ideally, the editor would proof read the Block Cinema Quarterly calendar, eventually collaborating with the student writers and making editorial decisions. If the editor shows exceptional ability, he/she would also work on other projects.

Qualifications:
An upperclassman in the English Department or Creative Writing program with experience editing is preferred.

Pay rate:
$8.50/hr

Block in Print Cashier

Responsibilities:
Cashier for Museum bookstore. Sell books and other items. Answer phones and visitor questions. Provide basic visitor information regarding exhibitions and programs. Interact with security staff to make museum a safe environment. Some administrative duties as needed.

Curatorial Research Aide

Responsibilities:
Assist the curators in the preparation of exhibitions and catalogues by providing research support, coordinating with authors and museums, developing supplemental material, proofreading.

Qualifications:
Art History background desirable. Must have solid research skills, attention to detail, organizing abilities and excellent writing and editing skills.

$7.50/hr

Print Room Conservation Aide
POSITION FILLED

Responsibilities:
Archive the collection by matting works on paper, frame works for exhibition, maintain inventory of conservation supplies. Additional responsibilities include aiding in exhibition installations, making and installing exhibition labels, and assisting in various manual tasks as needed.

Qualifications:
Previous matting and framing experience or portfolio and bookmaking experience is desirable. Knowledge of printmaking and photographic processes, drawing materials, and papermaking techniques is helpful. Must be capable of handling artworks (some heavy) safely. Close attention to detail, excellent manual skills, and a professional approach to work environment is required. Freshman and Sophomores are encouraged to apply. Students who can make at least a two year commitment to the position desired.

Print Room Assistant
POSITION FILLED

Responsibilities:
Participates in major project to re-organize the works on paper collection into standardized locations. Regularly transports work to and from the conservation lab, pulls works for visitors, and properly cares for and stores collection works. Maintains necessary records on the movement, location, and     project status of works of art in the Museum’s collection files and database. Additional responsibilities may also include preparing acquisition-related documents, assisting Museum visitors, and aiding in exhibition installations.

Qualifications:
Background in Art or Art History is helpful as is ability to identify print, drawings, and photographic media. Demonstrates a high regard for the care and handling of works of art and exercises conscientious use of time with careful attention to detail. Must be capable of some heavy lifting and effectively communicating with the public. Freshman and Sophomores are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those who can make at least a two-year commitment to the position. Position reports to the Senior Curator and Registrar.

Public Relations Aide

Responsibilities:
Play a key role in the marketing of the Museum to Northwestern University students, faculty, and staff and to the larger community. Assist with special events and promotional activities. Help maintain the Museum's mailing lists.

Qualifications:
Reliable and energetic. Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.

Public Service Officer

Responsibilities:
Provide security support during public hours. Responsible for greeting the public, fielding questions in the lobby, keeping attendance records, bookstore security, and working exhibition openings. Flexible schedule, 10-15 hours per week expected as well as attendance at security service meetings.

Qualifications:
Ability to work well with the public. Reliable, flexible and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must have neat and clean appearance.

Interest-Based Summer Internships

Individual internship opportunities can be created based on student interests and the needs of the Museum. Such internships may focus on a single project or be department-based. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. These unpaid internships take place during the summer.
